Anechoic Chamber Sessions with Emma Orfield Johnston:

At Orfield Laboratories, silence is viewed as a multi-sensory issue— one that extends beyond the absence of sound to include light, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and all forms of environmental input. When these stimuli are removed, the mind and body rebalance, as we no longer need to filter out the constant noise of the world. This concept, which we refer to as Perceptual Silence, is the experience of silence across all areas of human sensation— where in the quieting of the world, we begin to come back to ourselves.

We also work extensively with individuals experiencing invisible disabilities and cognitive and perceptual differences— including Autism, ADHD, PTSD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and more— many of whom describe the experience as calming and restorative.

Private Sessions of Silence:

Experience a controlled environment of acoustical silence and darkness within the Orfield Anechoic Chamber, the world’s quietest space. Each session begins with a brief phone consultation with Emma Orfield Johnston, Director of Orfield’s therapeutics initiative, to clarify the purpose of your visit and personalize the structure of your time in the chamber and at our facility. Sessions are designed to support rest and reflection, offering relief from the constant stimulation of the modern environment and providing a restorative space for those seeking quiet from both their internal and external surroundings.

Group Sessions of Silence:

Immerse yourself in complete silence and darkness for one hour, accompanied by a small group of guests. Each ticket entitles the visitor to 1 of 5 seats in the 12x10 suspended chamber. Hosted weekly on Monday and Fridays.

Private Group Sessions of Silence:

Immerse your private group of 2-6 people in silence and darkness for one hour. Each guest will be entitled to a seat in the 12x10 suspended chamber. These private sessions are hosted on a by-appointment basis Monday-Friday and can accommodate personal and professional affairs.

Multi-Sensory Lab Tours:

Standard Tour:

Step into the expansive breadth of Orfield Laboratories Inc., the world's only independent, multi-sensory design research and consulting lab.  This 1.5 hour tour of the facility is designed to immerse visitors into the lab's specialty in the sciences of human perception as related to design, the historic Sound 80 Studios (“The World’s First Digital Recording Studio"  Guinness, 2004), and the Orfield Anechoic Chamber, which is recognized by Guinness as "The Quietest Place on Earth."  

Tour includes a 20-minute session in the Orfield Anechoic Chamber

Architectural Immersion Tour:

Intended for but not limited to professionals in the fields of architecture and interior design, this 3 hour tour is designed to immerse visitors into Orfield’s 54-year old practice in the design of buildings as related to human perceptual and cognitive comfort. Including a walk through of the company's building and product performance labs, visitors learn about human perception and how our daily experiences of places and things impact our performance, preferences, and wellness.

Many of our visitors are interested in going beyond their initial visit, to deal with issues that are specific to them.  Invisible disabilities are common among all populations, yet some of our visitors are more curious than others.  For those visitors we offer a personal consultation service that is intended to deal with their specific area of interest and concern.
